Slippery Slope

Coresample Exhibition PICA Gallery Portland, OR October 2003

Statement: A few years ago I had the experience of being inside a grain elevator. I was prepared for the tall curving walls and the deep windowless space but was completely surprised by the fact that there was no place to stand. These grand architectural structures that grace our rural and urban landscapes are built with no regard for the human body. The floors are deeply inclined curves which resemble a funnel with a forbidding central pit. It is disorienting to be inside a built space where one cannot easily stand upright.

In the last year this physical sensation has returned to me again and again. The disorientation speaks to both the state of the world and to my personal experience
